Internationalized Mother-Tongue Teaching Program
In THSI primary school, we teach CLA using activity-based and inquiry-based approaches. Based on the Chinese National Curriculum, our CLA framework includes five parts which are: foundation knowledge, Chinese literature heritage, reading, writing, and debating. Students can build on their understanding of Chinese culture and history, practice their abilities of expressing their thoughts using their first language confidently and obtain the abilities of analyzing problems and critical thinking. In our colorful CLA lessons, teachers encourage students to be curious and to explore. We believe that literacy learning is not only about the ability to read and write, but also includes children’s psychological well-being, social ability, logical thinking, and cooperative ability. Therefore, our CLA program promotes students’ development as a whole person.
CHINESE-CENTERED EDUCATION
THSI incorporates English language immersion in several subjects. THSI builds on the Chinese National Curriculum, including mathematics and moral society teachings. Children are exposed to international holidays and celebrations, with special emphasis on Chinese traditions, history, and arts.
DUAL-LANGUAGE APPROACH
Children at THSI speak Chinese and English. Our staff, curriculum, library, and classroom material reflect this dual-language focus. Chinese and international teachers co-teach classes, alternating leadership. Our primary English language team evaluates students regularly and works closely with classroom teachers to ensure students have the support they need to prepare for middle school.
Building on tradition
Tsinghua’s long tradition of self-discipline and social commitment continues in our primary classes, where lessons are designed to build community and team spirit.
